birthday

Wonderfully made, the birth of our rainbow baby

Well, here we are. On the other side of waiting. What do you do when you come to the end of a very long waiting season? For the past three years we were waiting. For a positive pregnancy test. For a heartbeat. For a baby to keep growing. For a hope to remain. For God to hold us. For God to answer our hearts desire. For the next prenatal appointment. For nausea to end. For sleep to come. For labor to start. For our son's first cry.

And here we are.

Almost six weeks of holding, nursing, smelling, touching this new little life that God has graciously given us. And aside from the crazy hormones of postpartum, my heart feels like it's grown and healed in these weeks more than it has in the past few years. I am in awe each day and night that we have three sons. After so many months of wondering and waiting I am still in awe that he's here.

This morning as I was editing photos from his first couple weeks, I'm reminded of a few verses that are on my heart.

Psalm 145:4
"One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts."

Oh God, how I want to cry this out. Your works are MIGHTY. Even in the waiting, You are working, and I am so grateful for this. I want this verse to be what others see in my heart.

Psalm 139:13-14
"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well."

I can't help but look at all the little parts of our Theodore and see how he was made in secret. All those months of feeling him, I couldn't see or know how God was forming him. And he is made fearfully and wonderfully by a Creator we pray he seeks with all his heart. I pray we share the love of Christ in a very real and big way in his life and his brothers.

What a wonderful reward children are from the Lord. My heart is full.

A birthday celebration

Our baby boy turned 3 years old this August and we celebrated by taking a day trip to a local science museum. I can't believe we have another 3 year old at home now. I still feel like he is very babyish, even though he is much more boy than baby these days.

We decided to take a trip to Tellus Museum in Cartersville, GA. It's really not a far drive from our neck of the woods and because it was a weekday it was wonderfully quiet there. We had the museum nearly to ourselves! The boys loved seeing the dinosaur replicas, the gems and stones, the NASA exhibit (with a genuine astronaut suit to try on!) the hands on play areas (with a digging site for little archeologists) and so much more to explore.

We packed our lunch and stopped midway through our visit to eat it outdoors on a nice shaded bench right outside the museum. Really, if you have little boys this is truly a "gem" for them. And it was fascinating for Jonah and I as well.

Personally I really loved the NASA exhibit, and seeing a real moon rock. I also loved seeing all the gems and minerals and the ones that actually had a phosphorescence quality! You can see the large orb down below (left with regular light, right with black light).

I think I was more in awe of all that God created when I walked out of Tellus. Why would He choose to make rocks glow in the dark? Or why would He choose to make creatures as large as dinosaurs (including a ginormous sea turtle we saw a replica of, also pretty cool)?

This summer has been one where we've often stood in awe for who God is. For what He creates and designs with so much thought and care. And it's a humbling and grateful place that I find myself in each time I realize how good a God He is to care so much for those He's created, even by simply making a rock that glows in the dark.

We were thrilled to celebrate our big 3 year old at such a fun museum, and to also partake of our family traditions again. Every birthday has turned into a doughnut run for breakfast and a chance for each boy to choose a balloon of their choice. We love making traditions and opting for a family day trip over a party was a very good choice all around this year. Happy Birthday to our big boy, who has already nearly mastered his new balance bike!

aleksandr turns two!

We celebrated our youngest son's second birthday this past week. You know how time seems to move quickly when you become a parent? When you have a second child I think it moves about four times faster! I feel like it's only been a short time since we were riding home with him in the car and then suddenly we woke up to him being two years old. It's like a whirlwind some days in this thing called parenthood, but I know we can honestly say we have loved every moment. It's truly a joy to be a mom and dad and we loved celebrating with our boys and friends on this special day.

The morning started out with us singing Happy Birthday to a sleepy Aleksandr, followed by "paaan-kiks!!" (pancakes) for breakfast. It's sure to be a good day when it starts off with pancakes right?

We made the drive to Atlanta to meet up with a friend and her three boys at Zoo Atlanta. The boys were so excited to see all the animals and spend some time with friends. We ate lunch and rode the carousel—a favorite for all of us...who doesn't love the carousel?!—and we ended the trip by letting the boys jump in a splash pad. And naturally we took the opportunity to get our own feet wet too. It was a fun-filled morning and I enjoyed seeing the animals as much as the boys!

On the way back home we stopped to pick up balloons. We've started this as a birthday tradition about 2 or 3 years ago. We take the boys to pick out their balloon of choice. Aleksandr was pretty bleary-eyed and fuzzy-headed after having fallen asleep on the drive from the zoo, but he perked up enough to make his selection—a Thomas the Train balloon. Oliver chose an orange balloon which unfortunately popped about 2 minutes down the road in the car, thanks to a little too much excitement and rough handling. That was loud. And sad for Oliver!

We finished our evening celebrating with our good friends over dinner and homemade cake. It was a successful cake! Not always the case when you make it from scratch, but I made this one from one of my favorite food sites, Smitten Kitchen, and topped it with a buttercream frosting.

It's a little hard to believe we've now entered the twos yet again, but Day 1 was wonderfully busy and fun!

turning one {personal}

Our sweet little baby boy is about to turn one.
Tomorrow is his actual birthday, but since it's during the week, we decided to have a party for him over the weekend. The theme was adventure for our Aleksandr, who really lives up to that name. He's not afraid, he's bold, and he's passionate. We are so thankful for this wee one that God has blessed us with to raise up for Him.
It was a wonderful day to celebrate one year! We started the morning out with a little tradition of ours...a trip to the store to let the birthday boy pick out which balloon he'd like (and his older brother got to pick out his own too!). For some reason our boys LOVE balloons and the fascination with them is something to see!
The party was sailboat themed—for adventure—and it was all smooth sailing (haha, see what I did there).
There were some tears (actually bawling...our son gets a little overwhelmed around crowds, or anyone that isn't his mama), but overall the day was a wonderful celebration. As we enter a new year with our one year old and three year old, we feel extremely blessed to be parents to these amazing little guys.
